Well, the Superbowl has come and gone. Here are my thoughts: the Doritos commercial with the snow globe (the guy's "Crystal Ball") was pretty funny, as was the Cash4Gold advert with Ed and MC and all their gold brick-a-brac. The Potato Head commercial was also pretty funny, though I've already forgotten what it was selling. And despite some criticism from the Superbowl non-party crowd gathered at my house, I liked the Budweiser Clydesdale commercials.
However, I do have a question. Why, oh why, was the very first Superbowl commercial played an Avon commercial? Perhaps that was just a local spot (which begs the question, "Why would the first Superbowl ad be a local spot?"). Regardless, it's the very first advertisement that the multibilliontudic viewers of the Superbowl are going to see. And it's for Avon. AVON! Exactly who do they think the target audience of the Superbowl is, anyway?
Well, surely Avon's marketing department knows something that I don't. In general, I have much more faith in the marketing departments of multimillion-dollar corporations than I do in other institutions such as, say, governments or, say, schools. So maybe what they know is this: the Superbowl has multibilliontudic viewers. And for this one football day, lots and lots of those viewers will be people who wouldn't normally be watching football. Or possibly tv. And maybe, just maybe, I'm willing to concede that a number of those not-normally-watching-football folk might be the target audience of a company like Avon.
Even so...even so...it's the FIRST commercial. At the very least there should have been explosions, talking animals, and maybe even an alien abduction. But no, it was a rather flat 'vert with a fairly flat message: Go with Avon.
So be it.
My vote for best Superbowl commercial goes to the Potato Heads.
